Heavy Rescue Instructor course

10 Day course (subject to equipment levels)

Designed around a Heavy Rescue Tender/ Specialist Rescue Appliance equipment inventory.


This course builds on the Heavy Rescue Operator Course adding the additional equipment carried on these specialist Heavy Rescue vehicles including electric and hydraulic winches, low and high pressure air bags, lifting jacks as well as lorry loader cranes and many other items of dedicated lifting, pulling and stabilisation equipment.


This course is aimed at watch based Trainers or Service Instructors with the reference of Heavy Rescue to cascade and deliver training appropriately to Watch, Station or Service personnel. 

The course ensures Students are provided with the highest level of Heavy Rescue skills and knowledge based on their Services' individual appliance and equipment inventories. 


The course and its content can be tailored to reflect the In-Service appliances and equipment of the Fire and Rescue Service's Students. Pre-course consultation will ensure the course content is modified to make sure it meets the needs of the individual Students/ Fire and Rescue Service.


Pre-requisite requirements,

  • This course is intended to significantly raise the applicant/ Operator to Instructor level in all areas of Heavy Rescue, therefore evidence of previous education/ course attendance in Heavy Rescue is required 
  • Instructor/ Trainer Qualifications, attendee's will have or be working towards a recognised qualification in training delivery i.e. PTTLS, DTTLS or Cert Ed (PGCE).
  • Assessor/ Verifier/ IQA Qualifications, candidates with the requirement to assess and verify will have or be working towards a recognised assessor qualification such as CAVA or IQA.
  • Health and Safety Qualifications, Students responsible for design/ planning, procurement and delivery of Heavy Rescue training will have or be working towards a recognised Health and Safety Qualification such as IOSH or NEBOSH.
  • IT/ Computer skills, attendees will have undertaken or will be working towards recognised IT/ computer skills/ courses, such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint.


This course requires a 2-day annual refresher to keep current Heavy Rescue Instructors competent in role and updated with the latest best practice changes in equipment and techniques.  This refresher is not suitable for new staff who have not undertaken the full Instructors course.


N.b. Gareth Lloyd Technical Rescue recognises all Fire and Rescue Services/ Customer's needs and requirements will differ. Students must work within their own Service's policies in this regard but with the rationale being Students are prepared appropriately for delivery and cascade within their own Fire and Rescue Service.
